By Now Emily Sat

Our teacher just gave us the line, "By now Emily sat...." and we had to start writing from there. We only had a few minutes to write and this is what I came up with.

By now Emily sat on her front porch swing taking in the fresh fall air. It had been a long day. Actually the longest of days.

Just hours before Emily was leaving the cemetary after saying her last goodbyes to her husband of 53 years. Harold was so strong , so full of life, so everything to Emily. With her fraility she always assume that she would be the first to go but now she must deal with being all alone.

As the swing gently moved her back and forth she felt it resembled her life. One second in the past and the next second looking ahead at the future.

The past was much easier to deal with. The past was filled good times, good memories and a very good man. And now the future seems so empty. So many questions that will sadly go without any answers. But today isn't about finding answers.

So for now Emily sits, she swings, and simply feels the coolness of the air and takes in her next breath.
